The Three Rooms of the Tropical Greenhouse

After the University of Coimbra was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, redevelopment work was carried out on the Tropical Greenhouse between 2013 and 2018.

Designed for exotic plants, it consists of three rooms with distinct environments to house different collections. In the east room, which is also designed to host events, we find various species of orchids and bromeliads.

Next is the central room, designed to house tropical aquatic plants, including the emblematic giant water lily that we see in the Botanical Garden's logo. In this space, we also highlight the collection of carnivorous plants.

The west room recreates a humid tropical climate, with an average temperature of 23ºC and relative humidity of over 75%. In the first bed, we find native and endemic plants of São Tomé and Príncipe, such as pandanus or western soapberries. In the second, tropical plants that are part of our everyday life, such as coffee, cinnamon tree or mango, grow.
