Getting Here

By train

The fast trains stop at Coimbra-B: about 1h40 from Lisbon and about 1h from Porto. From Coimbra-B, a short local connection takes you to Coimbra station in the city centre. From there it's an uphill walk to the university — or a city bus if you'd rather save your legs for the Tower.

By bus

SMTUC city lines run from the centre up to the Universidade stops, putting you steps from the Paço das Escolas. It's the easiest way to skip the climb and still arrive on time for a Joanina slot.

By car

Be honest with yourself: parking uptown is scarce, and the old streets were designed for donkeys, not SUVs. Park in one of the car parks in the lower city and walk or take a bus up. Your future self, not circling the Alta for the fourth time, will thank you.

On foot

The classic approach, and the right one if you can manage it. The climb through the medieval streets up to Rua Larga is part of the story: students, traders and kings have all arrived this way, and the university reveals itself the same way it has for centuries, one steep cobbled turn at a time. Wear real shoes. The cobbles are beautiful and they are slippery when wet.

Easier ways up

Electric tuk-tuks work the hill from the lower town, and the city's funicular-style connections spare you the steepest stretch. Both drop you close to the top with your breath intact.

Where to point your map
