A king signs a university into being
In Lisbon, King Dinis signs the charter Scientiae thesaurus mirabilis — "a wondrous treasure of knowledge" — creating Portugal's first university. The country is barely a century and a half old and already betting its future on books.

First move to Coimbra
The young university packs its books and moves up the Mondego to Coimbra for the first time. It will spend the next two centuries shuttling between Lisbon and Coimbra, a scholarly institution still looking for a permanent home.

Coimbra, definitively
King João III ends the wandering — the university settles in Coimbra for good. Students, masters and manuscripts climb the hill above the river, and city and university begin the seven-century conversation that never stopped.

The palace goes to school
The Royal Palace — residence of Portugal's first kings since 1131 — becomes the university's headquarters. Throne rooms turn into lecture halls, and the Sala dos Capelos begins its long career of conferring degrees. It still does.

A library fit for a king
King João V's gift is completed — the Joanina Library, three rooms of gilded exotic wood holding what will grow to some 60,000 volumes. A colony of bats moves in behind the shelves and takes the night shift, guarding the books from insects.

The Cabra starts giving orders
Antonio Canevari's 34-metre tower is finished, and its bell — nicknamed A Cabra, "the goat" — begins ruling academic time. Its evening ring sends students home for the next three centuries. They grumble. It rings anyway.

The Marquis of Pombal reforms the university around experiment — a Chemistry Laboratory, a Botanical Garden, a Physics Cabinet stocked with the Enlightenment's finest instruments. From now on, nature is not just read about here. It is tested.

After the Republic, student life codifies the rituals still lived today — the black cape, the coloured ribbons of Queima das Fitas, the serenades of Coimbra Fado. The uniform of academic Coimbra becomes the one you will see in the street this afternoon.
