Transcript

This gallery features a collection of Portuguese and foreign minerals organised in accordance with Strunz and Dana classifications, as well as a set of crystallographic models. Your visit will enable you to discover both the most common minerals and some well-developed crystalline forms.

It is named after José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, a Brazilian naturalist, statesman and poet known by the epithet of Father of Independence due to his decisive role in the Independence of Brazil. He discovered four minerals, including petalite, which would later lead to the discovery of the element lithium, and andradite, named after him.
