The Weapons Room

The Weapons Room would have served as the infants' quarters after the works ordered by King Manuel for the Royal Palace. It conserves the halberds of the old Academic Royal Guard, hence its name. The Guard's main function was to maintain order and peace, ensuring that silence was maintained near the classrooms, that there were no disturbances or thefts and that people did not circulate at undue hours. Today, the university archers only use their weapons in solemn ceremonies.

The Weapons Rooms is covered with 18th century tiles, on which paintings alluding to the biblical cycle of Tobiah's life are displayed. The decoration of the room culminates in the ceiling painting with the Portuguese royal coat of arms.
