Rua Larga is the axis that connects the emblematic Praça da Porta Férrea to Praça D. Dinis. It got its name because it was for a long time the widest street in this high part of the city. It was around this artery of Coimbra's Upper Town that the Estado Novo (New State) organised the profound urban and architectural intervention to build the university city. In Praça D. Dinis stands a statue dedicated to this king, who founded the University in Portugal in 1290. Here stood the medieval castle, of which there are no longer any observable traces.
